Breakfast. Got up a bit later as today is a free day. We can explore on our own.
I have studied the metro map and I think I can get us to Nanjing Road where there are lots of shops. Got to get those last minute souvenirs! We easily walk to the metro stop by our hotel. It's around 5 minutes walking. On the metro I make a mistake and we pass our stop. I realized it quickly so we get off the very next stop, get back on the metro heading back so we can get off at the correct stop! The cobblestones are slippery from the rain so we have to be careful walking. We stop at some vendors. Kevin buys a kite. Mostly we're just taking in the surroundings and doing "window shopping". We go inside one of the larger mall like areas and admire the decor while going up and down the escalator! The rain is not making for a good experience so we decide to head back to the hotel.
Dinner is also on our own and the group has split up. Everyone is doing their own thing. Richard and I walk to the nearby McDonald's. Lots of locals. The staff are aware we are not locals and we are given a laminated menu that has pictures. Great. I point to what I want. Richard points to what he wants. We hold out our money and some of it is taken. I must say my happy meal tasted the same as back home. The only difference was the toy inside! We also got sundaes-strawberry for me and I think hot fudge or caramel for Richard. They really hit the spot. It was a nice meal. Back to our hotel we do our packing as we head home tomorrow. I can't believe our trip is over!
